I agree Papaver somniferum. Also called breadseed poppy because the seeds are used in poppyseed muffins and my favorite, Einstein bread. Don't ever take a drug test after eating poppyseed muffins (or Einstein bread). Another story...

My Mother in Law was an incredible baker. On a trip to Turkey, she decided to buy poppyseeds (ah-Oh!) because she hated spending money on key ingredients like poppyseeds and Marzapan. She asked the taxi driver to write it down and she went to the local market and started showing her scrap of paper with name to vendors. (BTW, my Mother in Law was a 95 lb. elderly Japanese lady). Finally someone said yes and she bought a kilo of poppyseeds in Turkey at a farmers market (How could this possibly go wrong?).

She actually got them through customs - a kilo of poppyseeds! Once back home, she went into production. On a visit with them, my M-in-L was pushing poppyseed bread and my F-in-L was warning us not to eat it. It was turning his tongue numb. I volunteered to take some of her poppyseeds home and plant them (I actually thought they were onion seeds).

Love-in-Mist!! She brought home a kilo of Love-in-Mist seeds. I am still pulling them out of my yard 20 years later.

PS: Although you have been told that the poppy seeds you buy in the baking isle won't grow, they grow just fine. You too can be harvesting poppy seeds (or opium).
Life is not a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside, thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and proclaiming...."WOW What a Ride!!" -Mark Frost
