I did, I had a Gnat issue at one point, so I topped with gnat nix and then sand.
In the future I will skip both, and just use a BT bacteria control product.
I did start out using a organic potting mix, and switched over to a custom blend of Peat, Vermiculite, and perlite, with Bio-char.
