What I have discovered.... and maybe this is not accurate, is that thin foliage is less prone to rust than wide foliage. I assume because rust needs an area in which to spread. Skinny leaves don't provide much area. But is that assumption wrong?


One thing I found this spring after a hail storm (small hail but enough to coat the ground) was that those cultivars with wider leaves had more damage (split/broken leaves) than those with narrower leaves (which had little to no damage). I guess that's to be expected due to more surface area. At least it occurred before any scapes had begun to grow.
