Yes, it did seem that the purples and dark lavenders were more vibrant in the catalogs than on screen. And even then, if they were vibrant on screen, not so much 'in person.' I might try an experiment this summer. I have umbrellas I got from Crickett Hill to cover my larger peonies to protect them from rain and collapse. I could put one over a particularly vibrant dahlia (in pictures) and see if it perks it up in reality.
