I haven't rooted Christmas Cactus (Schlumbergera truncata) cuttings in many years but I always let them lay out for 36 to 48 hours to allow the cut ends to callous over before planting. I used shallow containers and potting soil with lots of extra perlite mixed in to help with aeration and drainage. I've also used Rootone without any problem. I think the main thing is to keep newly planted cuttings on the dry side and don't plant them too deep, which could cause the stems to rot. keep them out of direct sunlight. They may take a few weeks to a couple of months to produce roots.
