@chris1948 here is what I use:
They are the Everlast zink markers with Brother indoor/outdoor laminated labels for the Brother label makers. My label maker is a Brother P Touch from Staples, not expensive.
I have some of these out there that have lasted for 5 years with no fading or lifting. I have also had very little problem with rust on the stakes and I think the ones that rusted were from somewhere else.
In a pinch to mark temporarily duck tape and a sharpie work well! I made a lot of duck tape labels before I got my markers.
