Marilyn if you had a leaf blower that would be ideal, raking very lightly would probably be fine, but I've noticed that these tend to detach easily and raking may make one large mess Thumbs down But these would do fine in shade, I have some planted in bright shade that doesn't get sun in the summer when the trees have leaves. They don't have the dramatic colors that the ones in the sun have but they are healthy Thumbs up I tip my hat to you.
