I know it sounds like a lot of work to just identify an Iris, and it is. There is a reason for all this work. The primary reason is to make sure a mislabeled Iris doesn't get distributed. There are so many Iris out there labeled 'x' when they are really 'y'. Most growers, both professional and private, do what they can to not distribute a misnamed Iris. I sell some Iris on eBay and I have quite a few that I believe are correctly labeled but don't distribute because they did not come from a recognised commercial grower. They go to the NOID bed and and go out as NOID. Not even a 'looks like' gets mentioned in the auction.
It may sound a little snobish at first, it did to me. But once you see what kind of effort goes into maintening integrity of iris it will make better sense.
I started a thread called Show Us Your NOIDs' so we can post pictures of some very pretty Iris who are nameless. We have just learned to love them and leave it at that. There is one fameous NOID Red that some have that is just georgious, but nameless.
So I guess what folks are saying is really enjoy the ones you have and when you buy new Iris go to an established growers site.
