If left alone, and untreated....the fungal "rots' eventually form a "fuzzy" looking mass of ......spores, I guess Shrug! ...that is, if the bacterial type of rot doesn't move in ! That's what my "symptoms" are, anyway. First, the fungal, (no offensive smell....the "rotted"areas are soft, but not really slimy.....then, if I don't do anything(and quite often , even if I DO something !.....things get REAL stinky, and slimy Glare .
When I can notice the onset, by the way the leaves gradually yellow, it always seems to be the fungal. Several years ago, during a really wet, rainy period, I had what I presume was "just " the bacterial soft rot.......plant looked fine, nice foliage, often in the midst of blooming.....bingo, a perfectly healthy leaf fan (or stalk) laying on the ground, the inside of the rhizome mushy, slimy, and VERY stinky Shrug!
