Rita: I thought you did that to give the pea plants extra soil depth?! Less watering. Your peas are much farther ahead than mine. Mine are only up 2" !

BTW, I researched voles in the garden & one organic suggestion was to 1) remove all black plastic or anything that can give them cover for their runs and 2) dig a 12" deep moat around your garden. Apparently they are afraid to expose themselves to possible predators by crossing the moat?! I think I will try that as my garden is only 20 X 20 feet.
