I posted a topic about this fertilizer thing. Have you or anyone heard of a reason Heucheras should not be fertilized. I know the parent plant of this beginning of all these new breeds of Coral Bells were from a wild forest grown plant.
The forest is very fertile being grown under loads of leaf mold. I guess that is why they are suppose to be planted shallow and moist soil. The forest ground is moist, shady and very fertile. I wonder if that is the reason it is a guide they should not need fertilizer.
My most success has been growing them in pots. I make a mix of leaf mold and compost to plant them in the coir pots which gives them the great drainage. I have not even had okay success growing them in the ground......over gravel topped with compost and leaf mold. I am sure it is because of our rain and freeze process late fall/Winter. It is just impossible to get drainage fast enough before they are in a block of ice.
