Really, I don't know. I never have planted a peony seed, these are just seed pods that I have missed deadheading and they 'popped' as you said and the seeds planted themselves. When I was mulching today, I found two more peony babies. These are at the feet of Fancy Nancy. They are just a single leaf.

Krinkled White is planted next to Gay Paree.
