Teresa there was a lot of that happening in my garden this year too. I think, for me, it is a combination of factors. Last year there was a solid winter long snow cover and nearly everything bloomed very well. I think many of the clumps needed a year to regain some energy - so bloomed sparsely or not at all this season.

This past winter, we had little snow cover, lots of heavy rain and periods of freezing and thawing. All took their toll on the beds. Lost a lot of small rhizomes that did not have good deep root systems.

I also thinned many clumps pretty drastically and re-set a smaller number of retained rhizomes. Most of those did not bloom this year either.

Hopefully next year will be better!
