You can pull a scale or two, getting as much as the basal plate (bottom portion of bulb where roots develop) as you can. I place them in damp soil-less mix and place a heavy book or two on top of them in a dark area and check in in a month or two.

Once, a few years ago, I scaled an entire Conca d'Or bulb. I ended up with a ton of small bulbs that I donated to local gardens and friends. I couldn't believe how many bulbs each scale had produced. I was overwhelmed! But it was great fun!
