I agree with Ken, it's not a task if you enjoy doing it and the rewards can be great.

As far as the Pea gravel, I too have used it to help absorb heat as well as keep my pots weighted as plumies can be very top heavy. One thing I have heard (not yet experienced) is that you don't want the pea gravel resting on the trunk as it can actually get too hot and burn it. Best to pull gravel away from the trunk just enough not to touch.
