I won't comment on the marketing concept of putting plants in planters that give the illusion that they are floating in air. I will comment on the inaccurate horticultural information being promulgated in the promo piece.
"Air Plant" is the lay term for an epiphyte. They do not just grow in the air. (Has anyone ever seen a plant just floating by unattached to anything?!!) Epiphytes (as opposed to terrestrials) are plants that grow "in the air" but attached to tree branches by very fine roots. The roots absorb nutrients from runoff from nearby plants to which they are attached. It is a symbiotic relationship and epiphytes are NOT parasites.
Bromeliads, many Orchid species and Staghorn Ferns are among the many epiphytes used as potted plants. The parlor Palm shown in tech video is most definitively NOT an epiphyte or air plant. There are clearly some credibility issues with this project! Yet, there are enough people out there with too much money that this project might turn out to be a success - maybe the next Pet Rock!
