A similar variety of Salsify grew on our hillside in the Okanagan Valley in B.C. My mother taught us to wait until the upper portion of the stalk, after the seeds left, dried out, and to cut the stalk about 6 to 8 inches down. We would carefully cut or slice off the empty top of the seed head. We would have already mixed up some soapy water, and would dip the fat end in the mixture, draw it out and blow through the stalk end. Then these heavenly, colourful soap bubbles would waft across the porch. It was sheer magic!
This would have been in the early 50's, and we were pretty isolated. We created our own entertainment.
