You learn to adjust to your environment. We know there are Rattle snakes out there, so we don't go wading through the tall grass in sandals, and watch where we're walking on the beaches to avoid stepping on something that could hurt us. The earthquakes are a lot less scarey than tornados or hurricanes in my opinion....though I do get a bit nervous when one rattles the window that's right over my bed.
