Thanks @Pandora for your ideas. I do have 2 litre bottles buried next to the "big" plants (ie tomatoes, eggplant, cukes & melons) but not the peas, lettuce, etc. I haven't succeeded in direct sowing anything this year....I just can't keep the soil damp enough. I did put water crystals in the holes for some of the plants but not all. I wonder if I could make a light mulch of soil crystals & a bit of soil & apply that?

I am almost tempted to put hardware cloth around the garden so I didn't have to worry about the voles. My plot is next to the compost bin area...I think they come from there.

@Pandora, my husband & I are planning to bike the Erie Canal this summer, or at least 1/2 of it. NY State Parks sponsors a supported bike ride in July. We will be going Buffalo to Syracuse, camping along the way. They provide dinners & breakfasts & water & snacks on the trail. We are trying to get into shape! Do you bike?
