Our hummers stay year round here, so feeders stay year round too. Not very many nectar plants in winter, but they also glean tiny insect from whatever is available. During migration it gets really crazy. We don't have a squirrel plague here, but I had to move one of my feeders from the arbor to a shepards hook when I caught a possum drinking from it. The orioles finally started using their own feeder, mostly, but the hummers decided bigger is better, so they use that too. The warblers manage to get some of it when they're here, and now the house finches are trying...they're really fond of the grape jelly that the orioles ignore. The main draw is running water and plenty of trees/ shrubs/ vines for them to perch in while they wait their turn and check for danger.
