In a mild coastal location it is essentially impossible to give the plant too much sun. Inland the story is different. I am guessing the plant is cranky because of the dry season, the lack of rain this past winter, and perhaps too little irrigation. Give it water every week or so and you will see a dramatic improvement with the first rains in the fall or winter. These plants can be a little moody but they're pretty tough in a mild climate situation.
