Spot on, Barbara! It is Eryngium amethystinum. It sure hates transplanting. I thought I lost it the year I planted it (and it came up quite poorly the following year too), but now it has settled in well. This one is supposed to be smaller than E. planum and E. x tripartatum, but I haven't had it long enough to know from experience. This one is getting a bit larger each year so far (this year about 16 inches).
