My understanding is that the NGA thinks the second word of a scientific name is called the species. But to me the genus and the specific epithet are the two parts of the species (different meaning of species).
Think about it this way…
NGA:
Genus: Hoya
Species: australis
Genus + species = species or botanical name
My way (which some biologists prefer):
Genus: Hoya
Specific epithet: australis
Genus + specific epithet = species
See what I mean now?
