You might keep the big plant going by keeping water in the dish underneath, or another container. Prop the pot up, keep the water level just at the pot bottom, and the tomato may root into the water as sort of hydroponic growing.
The broken piece will root like crazy. They're monsters when things are going good (warm sunny, water)
Plant it and they will come.
