I read that ornamental onions were good companions for roses (plus they repel voles), so my wife and I picked one out to plant next to the climbing rose. I decided to try to split it so that it was on both sides of the rose (wife gave me ok to try it
) . I had never tried splitting plants, and only heard about it in passing. I had no idea how to go about it properly and didn't have the patience to study it, so I just winged it. The plant looked like it had a natural place to split it in the middle, and that's what I did with the help of a box knife I had handy. The bloom that was on it was on one half and I planted that first. Then as I went to plant the other half, I accidentally dropped it. The plant was just barely hanging on to the root ball, so I carefully planted it and hoped for the best.
It grew weak at first, then it picked up. Yesterday I noticed it had a bud on it, how cool is that?
