Hi Mary, deer ate mine when I tried them outdoors. They also ate my tropical hibiscus and even an oleander bush which should have been extremely toxic. I hate the look of plants encased in wire cages, but it's almost the only way to grow things in deer country. You need a really good fence. I've tried all the smelly things like mint, garlic, coyote pee, etc and none of them work for long.
