Great observation Sharon, thanks for sharing the pics. The foliage on the sweet potato vine also probably helps keep the soil temp down and not just protect the daylilies from the blistering sun. I love using groundcovers as living mulch but it's also important to note that some can be very aggressive growers and need to be kept in check so not to deprive anything else from too much light.
