Nope- they're not caterpillars, they're sawfly larvae and are very beneficial as food for the birds according to Dr. Douglas Tallamy, author of "Bringing Nature Home"

Swamped by Goldfinches this summer, excuse the blurry shots until I get a real camera. I read that they are strictly vegetarian, even when feeding their chicks.

Watched these Mason wasps(Vespidae Monobia quadridens) for 5 minutes. The male on top(see the white dot on his face?) wasn't having much success with her.

Repulsive but fascinating, a Long-jawed Orb Weaver. The 2nd pic gives an idea of the length of its front legs compared to its body.
