From the comments above, I am prompted to make a few of my own
! There are, in every "group", or society, what I like to refer to as , "Snobs". I have a theory that most "organized" groups soon either "attract", or, maybe "create" "snobs". What you folks are talking about are "Iris Snobs" ! My "theory" also states that, until such time as you , 1) Are on "first name " basis with at least three noted hybridizers, 2) have accumulated at least a bushel of show ribbons, or 3) been involved long enough that all the members who were there when YOU started, are gone, you will be an "out sider", who really doesn't "understand". Now, that is NOT to say that ALL of those members of those groups are "snobs"...there are a GREAT many fine folks, who HAVE a bushel of ribbons, who DO know "noted hybridizers "(or, are one themselves), who are wanting to make your acquaintance, share knowledge , stories, and iris with you......but they , usually, are the ones doing any society work that needs done, or, are off helping another newbie with something, so, all you see are the "snobs".
There ARE many more "caring and sharing" types than there are snobs, thankfully, but the "snobs" are , unfortunately , the ones who get noticed ! That's what is so nice about these forums....NGA, Cubits, etc. , they are "our" *Iris Society*.....hundreds of members....world wide !....from every "level" of knowledge...newbie to old pro....folks with only a dozen plants, to those who grow thousands, amateur and professional, ones who grow medians, some who grow "talls", people who like "new ones", and some who like "old ones," bearded" lovers, as well as those who prefer "clean shaven". Here, we can "lurk", join in, or "move on" if we don't think we'll fit in, so, if you ask ME, you ALREADY are in the "best" iris society you are ever likely to find, but, it might be a "good thing", to see if you can ferret out those "caring and sharing" members of your "local" group, give them some added numbers and more "clout", and help eliminate "snobbery"!
