Try not to get water on the buds so as not to allow for susceptibility to rot.

If the Green Giant were mine and since it had grown quite tall I would cut off branches at the lower part and grow it as a standard. Using a very sharp knife or blade, cut the branches flush with the caudex/stem. And to minimize scarring as well as protect the cuts from rot, apply Elmer's outdoor wood glue to the cuts after wiping off any sap that might flow. The apex (top) will eventually branch out.
