The "golden rectangle" is also called the Golden Mean. Golden Ratio is probably the most accurate. The ratio is 1:1.6. I've applied this in the placement of the large pots in my front yard. 1:1.6 is an architectural measurement. The most known structure is the Parthenon. I don't know how it would work with photography unless you were deliberately setting up a shot. There is a lot of information on the Golden Ratio on the web, including instructions on how to use it. Hopefully someone else knows a lot more than I do.
