aspenhill said:Rita, I have grown every year that I have managed to plant tomatoes, but would be interested to know which of the dark type tomatoes you like better. From an earlier post, is it the Amazon Chocolate or Black Prince that you were referring to or is it something else altogether?

Don't get me wrong, I am not criticizing Cherokee Purple, although it did crack if not picked when just getting ripe. But the Amazon Chocolates will crack same in the rain. Just that they taste better to me.

But better than both in my garden is Black Prince. It has that nice dark tomato flavor in a smaller tomato. So much less tendency to crack. I like that, I also like that the Black Price are nice uniform pretty tomatoes. With Cherokee Purple and Amazon Chocolate, both put out some not so pretty ones. Still taste good but I have to keep the ugly tomatoes for myself.

Still don't know if I will grow Amazon Chocolate next year as there are others that I want to try still. But Black Prince will for sure be back in my tomato lineup next season.

For that black tomato flavor, some of the best are those small fruited cherry types. But sometimes you need a slicer.
