Keith -- I think you need more actual face-to-face involvement with these people... online interactions can end up feeling kind of creepy. (Since you mentioned FB, I'm assuming your relationship with this person was limited to that.)
If you are interested in donating vegetables, maybe check with Salvation Army or St. Vincent De Paul? (or some other shelter-type of organization?)
