jmorth said:'fruit is falling off the vine before the flower even comes close to being a flower' sentence seems off base... how does one get fruit without the flower?

I don't know the situation, but for me with the squash, it is the female flowers - those little 'pre-fruit' squash at the base of the female flowers. They turn yellow and wilt and fall off before the flower gets mature enough to open if the plant feels it has enough females going and can't manage any more.
