We used to use a product called Orange Guard that works very well at getting rid of ants and is not harmful to humans or animals. Lately I haven't been able to find it around here but we're out in the boonies so it may be easy to find where you are. It's made from orange oil, you can probably do a web search to find.

We also tried cinnamon and turmeric. It seems like the turmeric was somewhat effective.
