Hi & welcome! That's quite an interesting old specimen that looks like it's been outside for many years. What state or country are you in, if you feel like saying?
I've not had a cutting fail, out of too many to count. I stick them in a pot right away, all the way to the bottom. In your case, sticking it in the ground should be equally successful, if that's what you had in mind.
