I used my acorns for the first time yesterday. Go to your your profile, scroll down to manage badges. There you can purchase a badge from a large list, that shows your particular interest or talent. All that I picked required 5 acorns. I chose Pacific North West, houseplants and succulents, costing 15 acorns. Now I have three badges with my posts.
