I've never heard of this happening to anyone else, Teresa. Are you, by any chance, using Internet Explorer as your browser? That's usually the reason for seemingly inexplicable glitches.
Are you hitting your "back" button to get back to your home page? If so, you'll go to the same page you were on before and will have to reload or refresh the page to get rid of the red mailbox.
