As pretty as this native wildflower is, it's marginal in the upland Sandhills.
I found it growing in clay soil in a wooded lot (Macon GA).
After rescuing a few plants for the property owner's garden, she sent the yard crew out into the woodland to mow everything down... Turned a wildflower patch into a weed lot.
The rescues get grazed on by the deer.
The plants at my house barely cling to life from year to year... When I moved a clump or two to a "better" spot, they died.
So... Even though they're natural in this area... They wouldn't be my first choice... If I was out shopping.... Unless I actually wanted a challenge!
