The roots get huge. I have never mangaged to keep them for more than a year or so as my daughters are natural dyers. Apparently poppy roots make a great orange dye - the older the root, the better the dye.

This year, they convinced me to grow Indigo. I managed to germinate the seeds but the plants are small and pathetic out there in my garden. Its too hot and too dry in Reno for Indigo. Next year, I think we will have to try a summer time 'cold frame' in the shade to hold in the humidity.
Life is not a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside, thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and proclaiming...."WOW What a Ride!!" -Mark Frost
