Cannas (Canna) was my first thought too! I think in some zones the rhizomes will survive with a heavy layer of mulch but I'm not sure they would survive harsh winter freezes in the far north. To winterizes them, you can dig the rhizomes and store them in a protected area to be replanted in the garden in spring or you can dig the entire plant and pot it up to keep it indoors as a house plant during the winter months to be moved back outside when the weather warms.
