Another thing is to avoid watering late in the day or evening because that prolongs the damp conditions that they (and fungal diseases) prefer. My grandfather in the UK used to use a tin can with beer and sink it into the ground so that the slugs that go after it fall in and can't get out. I've never tried it here - they don't have skunks in England
There might have been some inebriated hedghogs though......
