Do it in the fall, Missy! Early fall, maybe mid September.

I say that because some of them came from me, and they were plugs. I wanted them to grow sufficiently in the pots before planting.

However, pick one up and see if the roots are coming out the bottom of the container. If so, you can plant now.

Could your grandson dig the holes and you can just put some compost in the holes and mark where they are?
