Im in your zone and I used to live and garden in Atlanta as well. There are plenty of plants scaled down for containers, I just grew a buttercup (winter) squash vine that stays small but produces well: Bush buttercup from Bakers Creek. It's not truly a bush but a very compact vine that you could grow in container and let it wander 3 feet or so over the sides or tie up to short trellis.
