It looks like a species of prickly pear (a cactus, which is technically a sucuclent). I'd say no on the leaving it outdoors. The more spines present on a cactus, generally means it'd more able to handle cold (the spines help protect it). Yours is pretty naked for a lack of a better word. I'm not sure what cacti would do well in your NJ winters.
