pinkruffles - since I have mostly fairly large clumps on my daylilies, and since this is the way it was done when I purchased several from our local daylily farm, I took a spade and after deciding how many fans to share, I cut into the clump with the spade at an angle toward the inside to make sure I got several fans and the tubers. Once I had my fans out I cleaned them up (took off anything that wouldn't grow) and removed the "partial" tubers so everything would be intact. I then fill in the hole where I took them out with dirt and stomp it in and water it. A couple of days later if the edges look weepy remove what isn't going to live anymore and my clump always comes back nice in the Spring. I live in zone 5b. Hope this helps!
