It seems that squirrels hate the smell of peppermint, and that a cocktail of jalapeno pepper (or garlic), vinegar and water is also an effective repellent.

We have lots of squirrels in our English garden, but they don't seem to bother the irises. They do steal all our walnuts and whatever bird seed they can, but we also have some big oak trees, so I guess the acorns keep them happy.
