Hi Karen. I have also grown Brugmansia's here and some did fantastic. Yes, they need to be covered against the cold or brought inside. I only have one old sick one now. I have had terrible problems with spider mites on them most years so pretty much have abandoned growing them. I grew them in pots and they grew so big and so fast they would end up out growing the pots . Hilarious!
