Every year when I give out Iris to people who never grew them before, I tell them about 2 weeks after they plant them, they will look dead. It's funny because every year they say the same thing, "I thought I killed them, but then they started to grow".

@yadah_tyger John, I kept thinking about your comment above all summer when I would go out to look at the rhizomes and, sure enough, you were right. That particular bed is thriving and has nice, tall leaves on almost all of the rhizomes. (There are a few shorties in the bunch, but I'm pretty sure they are supposed to be shorter.) All look very healthy, just like you said they would, despite the dead-looking browning after I planted them. I should get a picture soon to show how far along they have come.
