Sorry I didn't take pics before the heavy shower. But they show how the different cultivars handled it.
This 7 1/4" NOID was heavy so I had to hold it up a bit. Thumb of 2016-10-20/bron/eb627b

But this JEDI SUE McCORD or ?? maybe it's SPLENDID TOUCH nearly washed away Thumb of 2016-10-20/bron/832896
Tree peony 'Alice Harding' got splashed with grit as I haven't mulched yet. Thumb of 2016-10-20/bron/1e3ec6
She is (at far right of pic) amongst friends ie. east asian plants. All are sheltered by the regrowth of a once big camphor laurel, which will go when the bamboo gets established. They are great shade trees but they come up everywhere. I know a biologist who hates them with passion.
